Doughty Designs Sparks

This piece continued my exploration of layers, transparency and texture. Layers of black netting give a smokey effect to metallic spiraling sparks. I painted cotton batting to use for the center. It is sewn down only by the quilting lines.

Originally this quilt was made in the usual rectangular format. After quite some time, realizing how "static" the rectangle was, I cut away sections of the bottom and singed the irregular edges with a flame (and a bowl of water at hand).
