A "Bag O' Stuff" project was organized via the Quilt Art listserve in 2004. Participants gathered a bag of stuff in their studio -- stuff being just about anything that could be in or on an art quilt (typically cool stuff that the owner had no idea how to use up). The bag was mailed to a random participant, who could make anything at all out of it (adding some of her own fabric if she wished), and then send it back to the originator. The recommended size was 20 inches square.
The bag I received contained a fairly tight theme of Hawaiian fabrics and shells. I created a crumpled-fabric volcano spewing out kitschy things found in the printed fabrics. The surfer-dudes are happy to have hula dancers rain down. The only fabric of my own in this piece is the dark organza 'smoke' from the volcano.
Meanwhile, I sent a bag of totally uncoordinated Stuff to another innocent participant. She made me a lovely woodland scene.
