The first lighthouse at this location, the most southerly point in New Jersey, was built in 1823. The sea eroded away the land beneath the lighthouse, causing it to collapse. The second light was built in 1847, but was not high enough to be effective. The present tower was erected in 1859. It is a 170-foot tall white tower with a red lantern. Its flashing white light guides ships into the Delaware Bay. It is still active, though automated.
