sand dune
Cotton fabrics, cotton batting Machine pieced and quilted 24 x 24 Based on the photograph "Battleground Point, 1998" by Richard Misrach, with permission by the artist

The Nature Conservancy magazine is an inspiration to me in many ways, including conservation of our planet and terrific photography. The "Battleground Point" photograph by Richard Misrach appeared on the back cover of their 50th anniversary issue (Jan/Feb 2001). He says, "In 25 years of wandering the American desert, I have never seen sand dunes surrounded by water like we found there [Pyramid Lake and Stillwater Marsh, Nevada]. It happens very rarely, maybe once every 12 years, when you get enough rain for dry places to start filling up." His photograph is stunning and elegant.

I made this piece into a wall hanging as an exercise for myself, and to do something fun and challenging! I wanted to see if I could successfully create a reflection. Using fused fabrics, and carefully cutting out some gaps across them, produced the results I wanted.

Most everything in this piece is linear, particularly the quilting. The border is also based on the idea of reflection, with the brown and blue triangular shapes echoing that of the sand dune and its reflection.

I would like to express my gratitude for Mr. Misrach, a world-renowned photographer, for graciously giving me permission to show my variation on his work.
